Disturbed Earth

Kumjana Novakova & Guillermo Carreras-Candi / , & / 2022

Dark and melancholic reflection on the Srebrenica massacre and the tragedy's reverberations in the half-empty city, where three of the survivors each bear the heavy testimony of the past.

Featuring footage from a ceremony held 20 years after the genocide in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica, ‘Disturbed Earth’ opens the door to a dark chapter in modern European history. A truck decorated with flags and flowers enters the city with a load of coffins. Two decades after the Bosnians were killed, their remains are to be buried in a ceremony in the presence of those left behind. Then the focus shifts to three people who survived the massacre: Srećko, Mirza and Mejra. Through their routines, poetic texts and archive material from the war, their fates are unravelled. The pain of the past is embedded in the city and the landscape, in Guillermo Carreras-Candi and Kumjana Novakova’s existential and atmospheric work about the aftermath of a civil war.
