Efterklang: The Makedonium Band

Efterklang: The Makedonium Band

Andreas Johnsen / Denmark / 2024

A charming tour of North Macedonian folk music and a fascinating insight into the creative process of the Danish band Efterklang.

20 years into their musical life, alternative Danish band Efterklang come up with a bright idea. They want to go to North Macedonia and gather a band of local musicians to do a performance in front of the monument Makedonium, which celebrates the country’s freedom and independence. That is all the three Danish musicians know when they land in Skopje and start handing out flyers to recruit band members. Led by their hyper-energetic friend and guide, they are dragged out of the capital, into the countryside, up into the mountains and all the way to the political top in their search for allies and the country’s distinctive folk music culture. Andreas Johnsen’s film is a charming tour of both the Balkan country’s musical culture and a dive into the alternative creative process of one of Denmark’s most exploratory bands, where no one looks askance at you if you suddenly pick up a water glass and play with a small spoon.
