Mika Rottenberg & Mahyad Tousi / / 2022
A Korean TV show evolves into a colourful parallel universe during another lockdown in an imaginative film co-directed by artist Mika Rottenberg and Mahyad Tousi.
Mika Rottenberg’s satirical video works deconstructs globalised reality with dark humour and imagination, most recently in her major exhibition at the renowned Louisiana Museum of Art north of Copenhagen last year. Rottenberg’s first feature film, co-directed with Mahyad Tousi, is a lavishly staged science fiction fable from a near future where the world is once again under house arrest due to yet a pandemic. But at home in a pastel-coloured apartment, a woman (artist and dancer Okwui Okpokwasili in a phenomenal performance) manages to tune in on a watch party where a group of women gather around a Korean gameshow that turns out to be a portal to an interactive parallel universe. A colourful and humorous but no less meaningful film, which the makers themselves have called a ‘Jeanne Dielman’ of a near future. May we add that it is also one of the most important artistic responses to the pandemic era.
