The Elephant 6 Recording Co.

C.B. Stockfleth / / 2022

The charming story of the groundbreaking, leftfield indie rock scene that emerged from Middle America in the 1990s told by bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and by actor (and dedicated music geek!) Elijah Wood.

If you know, you know. But if you have no idea what Elephant 6 is all about, this film is a direct ticket to a charming and dedicated time warp of love for the geeky DIY indie rock pioneers of the loosely affiliated music collective of the same name. In the second half of the 1980s, a bunch of high-schoolers began experimenting with whatever psychedelics, jangly instruments and lo-fi tape recorders they could get their hands on. In the decade that followed, bands like Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Apples In Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control and Elf Power were spawned from the collective. The film lovingly depicts a time when you could tinker and create your own sound without distractions – in this case, the future’s take on the psychedelic pop and rock of the past.
